We’re Your Wind Damage Roof Insurance Claim Gurus

With years of experience and training, our public adjusters are experts in roof damage and property insurance claims.

Experiencing a tornado, hurricane, thunderstorm, or similar weather event with high winds can be frightening and potentially devastating for your home or commercial property.

Moreover, tornadoes are perhaps the most costly type and common type of natural disaster that occurs in the United States, with approximately 1,000 tornadoes touching down annually.

In fact, high winds of any sort are the number one cause of damage to homes in the United States and result in the highest number of homeowners’ insurance claims, ahead of more common worries like theft, fires, flooding, and other non-weather or non-crime related events.

What is a Wind Damaged Roof?

Wind damage is what occurs when powerful winds hit your home and batter your house and its roof, causing damage to the siding, windows, roofing, and other aspects of the property.

Wind damage to roofs can be caused by tornados, hurricanes, thunderstorms, or merely high winds hitting the structure.

Damaging winds are considered to be winds that exceed 50 mph to 60 mph; furthermore, tornados can reach wind speeds over 100 mph and carve a path of destruction for hundreds of miles.

The stronger winds can literally tear the roof off of a house or other structure; that said, even less powerful winds can cause significant damage.

Signs of Wind Damage to Your Roof

Wind damage takes many different forms, including roof leaks, issues with the gutters, damage to the chimney, vents, and the fascia (the long straight board that runs along the bottom of the edge of the roof), and any other special features that your roof may possess such as cupolas or skylights.

Some of the signs of wind damage to a roof include loose, cracked, curled, or missing shingles, loose asphalt granules, issues with the soffit vents along the eaves and the fascia, or problems with the chimney.

A hail damage roof inspection should also be necessary because they share some of the same symptoms as a wind damaged roof.

Areas that are More Prone to Wind Damage

Some areas of the country are more prone to wind storms and wind-related weather events than others.

For instance, the Great Plains states (also known colloquially as “Tornado Alley”) are more likely to experience tornados and extremely high winds than other parts of the country.

This is caused by cold dry winds moving south from Canada and warm moist air coming north from Mexico – when the two meet, windstorms, tornados, and strong gales result.

The southeastern coasts are also at risk for wind damage due to hurricanes and the associated high winds.

What Causes Wind Damage?

Natural disasters like tornadoes, thunderstorms, or even strong winds can all cause wind damage to your home and your roof.

What’s more, not only can the wind itself cause damage, falling tree branches and other objects like lawn furniture blowing onto the roof can result in issues as well.

There is more than one type of damaging wind that can affect the integrity of your home and its roof – the two main ones are tornado winds and “straight line” winds.

Tornado winds are somewhat self-explanatory, while straight-line winds are the type often caused by the pressure changes from a thunderstorm, hail storm, or wind storm.

Types of Wind Damage and How it Manifests on Different Roofing Materials

There are the obvious types of wind damage, such as when high winds blow off shingles, sections of the roof, or even the entire roof in the case of tornadoes or hurricanes.

One thing to be aware of is that wind damage looks different on various types of roofing systems and areas of the roof.

Here’s a guide:

Wind Damage on Different Roofing Materials:

  • Wooden Shingles or Wooden Shakes: The shingles will be missing, splitting, buckling, or curling, and they, will show algae, mold or decay over time.
  • Composition Or Asphalt Shingles: There will be broken, damaged, or missing shingles, curling, and missing granules which may be scattered on the ground around the roof.
  • Metal Roof: There will be dents and dings, and parts of the roof may lift up or peel up.

Appearance of Wind Damage by Location On The Roof:

  • Flashing: There will be tears, punctures, and buckling, especially around the corners where the seams join together.
  • Chimneys: You will see damaged bricks, loose or missing flashing near the base of the chimney, or cracks in the joints or cap. The chimney may also be tilted or lean to one side if the winds were particularly intense.
  • Soffits, Fascia, Peak, and Ridge Vents: The vents may be clogged or cracked.
  • Gutters: Any bent, sagging, or even missing sections of the gutters or downspout need to be repaired as soon as possible.

How Tree Branches and Other Debris Factor into Wind Damage

Strong winds alone aren’t the only source of wind damage to your roof; rather, debris and flying or falling objects like tree branches, entire trees, and loose objects in the yard like patio furniture, BBQ grills, playground or sports equipment, or anything else that’s unattached nearby and heavy enough to make an impact.

Inspecting Your Roof for Wind Damage

Of course, sometimes that will be obvious – like a large hole in the roof – but sometimes there will be smaller issues that could lead to bigger problems down the line. Hiring a professional licensed inspector, public adjuster is always a good idea if you even suspect that your roof has suffered from wind damage after a major storm or weather occurrence.

How to Protect Your Property from Wind Damage

roof damage insurance claim wind

One of the easiest ways to protect your roof and the rest of your home from wind damage is to ensure that any tree or tall hedges or shrubs are trimmed back and nothing is overhanging your roof and there are no dead or dying branches that would be easy for a powerful gust of wind to tear off, causing them to land on your roof.

In addition to maintaining trees and other foliage, if you know a major storm is coming, you should also bring any outdoor furniture inside, secure your windows with plywood and make sure that your garage or shed doors are secured with vertical braces.

Essentially, you want to make sure that there is nothing loose that could fly into your roof and cause damage.

How to Repair Wind Damage

Fixing damage from high winds is generally best left to professional roofing contractors since even small problems like a missing shingle or two can be a sign of an bigger underlying issues, particularly if you have an older roof, one that has previously been extensively repaired, or has otherwise already been proven troublesome.

While if you are particularly handy, you might think that you can repair the wind damage to your roof yourself, but that might not be advisable since roof repair can be complex, dangerous, and there are many factors and elements that only an experienced roofer might notice.

In addition, repairing the roof yourself may be problematic when it is time to make an insurance claim (most insurance companies require a licensed roofing professional to provide an estimate and do that work) and you may void the warranty on any materials used if they are not properly installed by someone with the appropriate manufacturer’s certifications and designations.
